Today we share our thoughts on the story of Taylor LeBaron. He is a 17 year old who has published a book called Cutting Myself in Half: 150 Punds Lost, One Byte at a Time. His story of losing one half of his body weight, at the age of 14 is really inspiring. Summer and I talk about some of the things that any teen can apply in their life to succeed in accomplishing the things they really want to in life.

Some of the topics that we discuss are:

How you self talk affects your feelings and your behavior.

The difference between wanting something and making it happen and wishing for something to happen.

You can read more about Taylor and his story here.

Well, I can’t believe it is already August 19th! We are mid-August almost! The summer months have really flown by for me and from what I’m hearing lately for most people. This week, I’ve spent the majority of time talking about “getting ready for school.”

I remember on the first few days of school, always being asked the question, “what did you do this summer?” I hated that question because my answers to it always sounded so lame and uninteresting: “practice in the morning, friends and work.”

So, I’m wondering about you guys and if you have had any better luck finding fun in the summer. There is probably only about one week or so left before school starts and I wonder if you feel ready. Not just for the academic part of school but also for the social part of school. To me, it always seemed like the academic part just comes no matter what and can definitely be stressful but the social part of school was always a bigger deal.

Here are some tips as you get ready for school in the next few days or weeks:
*relax about the schoolwork
*stay organized
*prioritize your day and time
*know that everyone is nervous just like you
*plan for fun weekends with friends
*say hello to a new person every day

Just a few thoughts! Get ready- it’s coming
Summer

Don’t we hear that expression a lot during this time of year? I wanted to send a quick message of hope and gratitude today. In my work and in other capacities during the week, I often get to work with teens as I have mentioned before. This last week, I had the opportunity to meet with one teen who has really been struggling with friends and dating this year. As a result, they have lost a lot of confidence and worth as a person. As I listened and talked with this friend of mine, it became very clear to me that one of the things that would really help this person see their own value would be for them to express daily one thing they were grateful for about their abilities, talents, appearance or attitude.

I give you that same challenge: every day write down one thing that you are grateful for and remind yourself about it the next morning so by the end of the week, you will have 7 things about yourself that you are grateful for. Try it and let us know what you have come up with okay? We’d love to hear about it…

*Summer
