So lately at work I have been meeting with a number of teen girls that have shared with me how difficult it has been to make decisions. I learned a very simple and awesome tool from a dear friend and colleague of mine named Dr. Paul about decision making that I wanted to share today.

First we will have a quick vocabulary and grammar lesson:

The suffix – “cision” means to cut. Let me give you a few examples of this suffix..

An “in-cision” means “to cut into”

An “ex-cision” means “to cut out of”

Therefore… because the prefix “de” means “off”.. a “de-cision” means “to cut off”.

No wonder decisions are so difficult to make right? It we have to cut something off.. (meaning other options or choices) that is very difficult. For example, if you are friends with someone who starts making decisions that you don’t agree with, you would have to de-cide whether or not to be friends with them still. If you were to choose not to be friends, that would literally mean “cutting off a part of your friendship” which sometimes feels like you are cutting a part of yourself off too.

Decisions are tough to make and there isn’t one formula for decision making. But it is important to also remember that we almost always have the options of changing our mind about things too. Good Luck!

*Summer
