Listening and Empathy

written by Mat Edvik

In our last podcast we talked about the importance of being a good listener. One piece of being a good listener is the skill of showing empathy. As Audrey Hepburn states in the above video, empathy is the ability to put yourself as much as possible in the shoes of the other person. When you are able to do that and are able to communicate those feelings to another person, they know that you understand them. When the person you are talking to know that you understand them, they feel validated.

So often we try to get our point across to someone else before we hear their side. When we show empathy and understanding to the person we are communicating with, it increases the likelihood that what you want to say to them will be heard. As Stephen Covey puts is, and as we stated in the podcast, “Seek to understand before seeking to be understood.”
